Ed Kuepper and Jeffrey Wegener on tour in Australia, 2005

ED KUEPPER with JEFFREY WEGENER - HIGHWAY TO HELL!

Response to ED KUEPPER and JEFFREY WEGENER's Wednesday night residency at Brisbane venue, The Troubadour, has been overwhelming. Word of mouth from the first show resulting in sold out shows the next two Wednesdays. And it's little wonder, with a song selection that thus far has included; The Saints' Know Your Product & Swing for the Crime, The Laughing Clowns' The Crying Dance, Theme From 'Mad Flies, Mad Flies', Collapse Board and Eternally Yours plus All Of These Things and Messin' Pt.2, from Ed's solo years. There's even a healthy smattering of cover versions from the Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground, Del Shannon, Dean Martin and many others. Best of all, Ed & Jeffrey perform the whole evening. No support, just two x forty five minute sets! Bliss.

This is not ED KUEPPER in acoustic mode though. It's a full volume experience, more akin to the Aints than the Today Wonder era, Kuepper. Check this review from Brisbane street paper, Time Off to gauge the excitement this duo is generating:

It is with great pride then, that, Feel Presents can announce an East Coast run of intimate - maximum pleasure- sized venues from the duo. In addition, ED KUEPPER with JEFFREY WEGENER have been confirmed as special guests to Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds at their sold out Melbourne Town Hall show. More value for your buck! In 1973, while still at high-school, Kuepper formed The Saints, the group widely acknowledged (along with The Sex Pistols and The Ramones) as having set the template which we today know as 'punk'. Since the demise of The Saints in late 1978, Kuepper has continued to perform and record primarily as a solo artist. A newly re-mastered CD box-set of his work with The Saints was recently released by EMI Records, while a box-set of his equally seminal work with the Laughing Clowns (1979-84), will be out shortly on Hot Records, along with a definitive 3 CD compilation covering his extensive solo years titled This is the Magic Mile.

Jeffrey Wegener's drumming has truly legendary status in Australia. Having played with Ed Kuepper in both The Saints and Laughing Clowns (he also played for a brief time in Nick Cave's group The Birthday Party), as well as Melbourne's Young Charlatans, Wegener is perhaps the most natural musical foil for Kuepper's exquisite rhythms and electric-guitar playing. Capable of great variation and subtlety, his jazz-inflected style has been described as "somewhere between Gene Krupa, Keith Moon and Elvin Jones". Recognised as one of the greatest drummers of all time in a JJJ poll, his playing has been acknowledged as a prime influence on many of Australia's most highly regarded drummers including Lindy Morrison [Go-betweens] and Jim White [Dirty Three].
